Our New Marshall Staunton Chess Set resembles closely that of the circa 1900-15 Jaques of London sets. The New Marshall is named after Frank Marshall, one of the top U.S. chess players in the early 1900s having won the U.S. championship in 1904. The New Marshall is a club size set with a 4.4" tall king with pieces that are robust and heavy. The knight is attractive with simple features that give this set a special charm. Pieces have a soft and silky lacquer finish that gives them the look and feel of an old, antique chess set (in new condition). The boxwood is stained to a dark amber color to replicate the patina of boxwood a hundred years old.
The king, queen, and bishops have noticeable shorter columns that most sets with a slight curve from the base to the collar. The king has a tall crown with a traditional formee cross. The queen is relatively short with a narrow crown that is thick to prevent breaking and has 10 softened points that are perfectly spaced. The bishop has a large miter with a unique slot that angles inward to the center creating an inner point. The rooks are broad and heavy standing even with the knight's nose.
