Maharajahs, their advisers, and support guard face off in this theme set from
the land of India! Bright colors, characteristic dress, and authentic weapons
display some fine qualities from this remarkable chess set. The Maharajah rides
in his awning covered booth atop his war elephant, and advisers surround him,
likewise mounted on war elephants. The knights are nobly mounted sword bearing
officers, probably the honor guard to the rajah.
Rounding out the rear ranks with the rooks, there are the unusual camel-mounted
soldiers, providing the quick support to where it is needed! And, not to be
disregarded, the rifle armed front ranks show a discipline and determination
to face and beat all odds!
From a period of transition in the land of India, this set comes from the time
after the British influence was felt, yet far before modern times. The British
influence is seen in the weapons and attire of the men. Rifles and uniforms
with a slight European flair denote a foreign guidance in the warfare dress
and equipment. Yet the elephants speak of the times of ancient India, when the
power on the battlefield was without a doubt the giant elephant.
The red chessmen have brilliant colors and small headgear of blue to finish
the touch, while in opposition, the blue soldiers have navy blue uniforms, plus
headgear of red for a dash of color on top!
