Set in Medieval times, the kings are imposing figures in their crown and armor, with the striking queen at their sides in her jewels and coronet. The bishops look very much like authentic Bishops with fine embroidered robes and distinctive headgear. Then, on to the knights; or shall we say, horses? The portrait of these warhorses captures both the strength and intelligence of the horses that formed the core of medieval armies. The rooks could be nothing else but a castle to denote the strength and power of medieval countries and nations. And finally, the one who bore the brunt of battle, the heavily armored knight masquerades as the lowly pawn. I think I'd think twice about the 'lowly' part!
